Midnight's Children
Salman Rushdie
Beautifully written. One of the quotes on the back of the book describes it as a "continent finding its voice" and I do think I agree with that characterization. Rushdie writes dialogue in a way that sounds so natural and familiar to me. There are certain phrases and moments where it sounds like a conversation I might overhear in India with my family. The realization halfway through the book came out of LEFT field, had no idea where the story was leading. It was very interesting, but did feel aggressively dense at times. Took me a while to get through, and was a bit fatiguing. I think this was largely because the writing is so dense and beautiful, definitely want to read more from him in the future! Was also very cool to hear descriptions of Srinagar and loved the opening to the book about BIG NOSES.
