Crime and Punishment
Fyodor Dostoevsky tl. by Oliver Ready
One of my desert island books is Dostoevsky's The
Brothers Karamazov, which is far and away one of the
best books I've ever read. Crime and Punishment was
described to me as accessible, but still a classic in
the pantheon of Dostoevsky. I will say that the story
bears his fingerprints and the atmosphere he is able
to conjure for most of the book is intensely
oppressive and g r i m y. The ending felt very abrupt
and not in-line with what I was expecting. I did
appreciate how much easier it was to read than The
Brothers Karamazov, but I don't think it hit nearly as
well.
