Shin Godzilla
Hideaki Anno & Shinji Higuchi
At once a love letter and harsh indictment of
contemporary Japan, Shin Godzilla is simply one of the
most brilliant movies I have ever seen. Giant monster
movies have always fascinated me for their ability to
offer insight into national and international
decisionmaking. How *would* a government respond to
the sudden emergence of a multi-skyscraper tall
radioactive lizard? How do you even begin to consider
a response? Shin Godzilla deftly tackles these
questions, while remaining fundamentally hopeful for
our shared future. It's difficult to not view the
movie as a parable for catastrophic climate change,
and watching this has made me severely disappointed
with the American Godzilla franchise. Just let Aaron
Sorkin direct one. Please. Please let him.
