Jordan Peele
Really enjoyed this one! The number of CLOUDS in this
film was INsane. Loved the subversion of expectations
on the nature of the UFO and really enjoyed how Peele
contrasts the UFO with Gordy the chimp. I watched the
film as a refutation of humanity's increasing desire
to document and create spectacles out of everything.
Gordy snapping and the UFO's violence both seem to be
born out of hostility to being turned into nothing
more than cheap amusement. I think Peele is thinking
about this violence within the context of humanity
slowly fraying because of our relationship with social
media and technology. I also think he contrasts
Gordy's violence with the UFO's; in that, Gordy is
ultimately easily stopped because of less access to
technology and higher strategy. The UFO is distinct
from this, and is able to commit extreme violence with
impunity because of its technological prowess. As
humanity gets more sophisticated, I think Peele is
commenting on the increasing danger we will find
ourselves in. Or maybe none of this is right and it's
literally just Black Cowboys v. Aliens. Oooo and also
the origin of the movie coming back to the black
jockey riding his horse is actually insane. Very cool
idea and really well incorporated. Fantastic film. Big
fan.
